The challenge

Westfield Stratford City and the Olympic Park welcome millions of visitors, many by bike. Two-thirds of the riders we surveyed had experienced bike theft.

Space owners wanted secure parking that riders would trust, without civil works and without any risk to their reputation.

Results

  • 1,074 secure parking sessions
  • 779 registered riders
  • 82% of riders in the final week were returning users
  • 94% of sessions successful by the end Up from 12.5% in week one
  • 0 bike thefts

What we did

  • Interviewed riders and landlords to understand what makes people trust a lock they have never seen before.
  • Co-designed a trust campaign and on-site signage with the Design Council and Sustainable Ventures.
  • Retrofitted 20 docks onto existing racks across retail, transport and venue sites.
  • Improved the service while it ran: clearer signage, video onboarding, friendlier error messages and live chat support.

In their words

“This innovative bike docking solution enhances both security and convenience for our shoppers, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable travel options.”

What we learned

Trust is the product. Adoption climbed as soon as riders understood what the dock was and how to use it, which is why session success rose from one in eight to more than nine in ten.

Owners of e-bikes and high-value bikes were the core users. Riders also told us that visible secure parking signals that a space owner cares about them, whether or not they use it.
